Reviews Thoughts Are Things

How many times have I listened to this album? Possibly fifty times. And I’m sure I will listen even more to it in the future. The band is saxophonist José Lencastre’s Nau Quartet with Rodrigo Pinheiro on piano, Hernâni Faustino on double bass, and João Lencastre on drums. The new voice is Pedro Carneiro on marimba to become a quintet. They present us four tracks of around ten minutes, all clearly improvised, but how! The piano and the marimba form an unexpected great match, both creating a flowing harmonic river that creates the structure for José Lencastre’s strong tenor or more sensitive alto. The bass and drums actively participate in creating the fullness of the band’s sound. Whether in the more intense opener “One Way To Cultivate Courage“, or the slower and more lyrical “Thought Atmospheres“, the vibrant “Your Latent Powers“, or the gentle “The Magnet Of Thought“, the whole band is in supershape, making music that is cohesive and unidirectional. Like with Lencastre’s other bands or with the RED trio, the music is warm, emotional while being free as the wind and flowing as the river, even to the point of being hypnotic. As the listener, you can only sit back and well … listen and enjoy this warm blanket of sound to envelop you, to rejoice in the solos and the interplay. Despite its inherent freedom, the music has a post-boppish accessibility with sometimes even bluesy undertones, only showing that they are deeply rooted in jazz tradition. Stef Gijssels

The supergroup of José Lencastre is joined by the phenomenal Pedro Carneiro on marimba. The sat was recorded in March 2021 at OCP – Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa, Algés. The starting “One Way to Cultivate Courage” lasy over 11 minutes and is already a highlight. The music oscillated between free jazz and free improvisation and is simply majestic. T, also playted on alto, the dialogues between tenor saxophone of José and piano of Rodrigo are exquisite, and so is the work of the rhythm section. Perdo’s marimba adds “poetic touch”. “Thought Atmospheres” prove that everything is a highlight here: this time this is a kind of more delicate ballad played on alto. “Your Latent Powers”, reminds me a little of “kind free jazz” music of Ivo Perelman. The closing “The Magnet of Thought” lasts over 16 minutes and is another masterpiece of the genre, with incredible changes of moods, expression, solos and collective improvisations. Wonderful stuff!!! Maciej Lewenstein

There’s a lot of fascinating music coming out of Portugal. Saxophonist José Lencastre has been around for a little over a decade, but he’s really been on a hot streak for the last five years or so. In addition to multiple one-off improv projects and live encounters, he’s made several albums with the Variable Geometry Orchestra, a multi-generational ensemble that blends out jazz with avant-garde electronics. He also leads his Nau Quartet, which features pianist Rodrigo Pinheiro, bassist Hernâni Faustino, and his brother João Lencastre on drums. They’ve made three albums since 2017, and on this fourth release, they’ve brought in a special guest: marimba player Pedro Carneiro. The deep wooden tones of the marimba give it a very different feel from the vibraphone or even a xylophone; it booms and sings. That’s not the only change here, either. On previous Nau Quartet albums, Lencastre played alto sax only, but this time he’s also playing tenor, giving the music even more muscle. On the opening track, “One Way To Cultivate Courage,” his lines are quick like snow flurries whipped by the wind, and the band rattles and surges behind him, his brother tossing out martial snare runs as Pinheiro’s piano clangs and jangles. Carneiro’s marimba is a countervailing force, offering pointillistic commentary that sometimes teams up with the piano to bracket the other three, but just as often makes its own statement from the corner.

Portuguese sax player José Lencastre has wanted to play with marimba master Pedro Carneiro since the first time he heard him play about 15 years ago. The classically-trained Carneiro feels at home with contemporary music, modern jazz and free-improvised music and recently collaborated with drummer Pedro Melo Alves («Bad Company», Clean Feed, 2021) and pianist Rodrigo Pinheiro (who plays in Lencastre Nau Quartet, «Kinetic Études», Phonogram Unit, 2021). And as Lencastre tells in his liner notes, some thoughts have a tendency to materialize into actual things, ideas become real, and dreams come true.

«Thoughts Are Things» was recorded at OCP – Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa in Algés in March 2021. Its atmosphere was inspired by the time Lencastre visited the Percussive Department at Eastman School of Music in Rochester and listened to contemporary works. Lencastre plays here the tenor sax in addition to the alto sax that was before his sole horn, and his Nau Quartet features his brother, drummer João Lencastre, and two-thirds of the RED trio – pianist Rodrigo Pinheiro, and double bass player Hernâni Faustino.

The four extended pieces are credited to the five musicians and highlight the immediate and urgent rapport of Pedro Carneiro and José Lencastre. The music on the opening «One Way to Cultivate Courage» flows naturally, and sketches open, loose textures, but in a passionate and risk-taking interplay that enjoys the past collaboration of Carneiro and Pinheiro. The more structured and slow-cooking «Thought Atmospheres» offers first the introspective, lyrical of this ensemble, led by José Lencastre’s warm, singing voice and the subtle ways that Carneiro and Pinheiro converse before its cathartic coda. «Your Latent Powers» suggests a reserved, chamber atmosphere and an organic playfulness. The last «The Magnet of Thought» deepens further the profound affinity of Carneiro with the Nau Quartet, and the elusive, subtle ways of the open, introspective dynamics of this ensemble.

Sometimes, dreams do become true and beautiful. Eyal Hareuveni

Ilia Belorukov

Not exactly percussion, but not quite a melodic instrument either, the motor-driven vibraphone and its larger acoustic cousin the marimba occupy a unique place in improvised music. Mule-like neither horse nor donkey, the wood or metal bars idiophones have advanced to the front line, but still retain percussive power. An idea of what the Modern Jazz Quartet may have sounded like if it had opted for free form, The River is Full’s eight live selections are based as much on the sweeps and echoes of Cypriot vibist Andria Nicodemou’s instrument as the churning projections from Americans drummer Laurence Cook, bassist Damon Smith and the piano and synthesizer of Eric Zinman. Meanwhile the all-Portuguese Thoughts are Things introduces the marimba stylings of Pedro Carneiro to the Free Jazz Nau Quartet of saxophonist José Lencastre, pianist Rodrigo Pinheiro, bassist Hernâni Faustino and drummer João Lencastre.

While initially studying so-called classical music, Nicodemou has since improvised with the likes of Joe Morris, allowing her to contribute alongside the keyboardist and drummer, who have been bedrocks of Boston’s free music scene for decades, and the peripatetic bassist. In Lisbon, Carneiro who has performed with international symphony orchestras is heavily involved in New music having premièred over 100 new works. Despite this emphasis on the notated, there’s no pomposity in his contribution to four improvisations alongside this quartet of committed younger players.

Building on classic improvised music the Boston quartet moves its narratives from darkened piano pumps, affiliated bass string slices and rubs plus drum ruffs and smacks to animated vibe projections that resonate elastically. Expanding the exposition from col legno rubs from Smith, low-pitched inner piano echoes and intermittent drum patters, the four eventually get to a low-key climax, only to intensify the pressure on the extended “A Mild Sun Darkens”. Then Zinman’s keyboard jumps and jabs join Smith’s hard string strops and Nicodemou’s carefully angled bell-like chiming. Warmer vibe echoes added to sympathetic keyboard comping and hi-hat taps, splinter then reconvene the narrative as it leisurely moves to the conclusion. Working down to andante and up to allegro tempos during the remainder of the set, space is made for an unforced drum solo, some balladic piano expression as well as a snowflake-like dusting of metal bar slaps when presto bass string swipes and concentrated speed from the piano-drum combination doesn’t come to the fore. Still the sophisticated sound melding is confirmed on the concluding “No Birds, No Wind”. A short essay is tonal suspension the piece is based around the metal bar color resonation from Nicodemou that meld with cymbal shatters, high-pitched bass vibrations and a story-telling motif from the pianist. Eventually Zinman reasserts the exploration of motifs examined at the top as the piece settles with final vibraphone clanks.

Although lacking electric power, Carneiro’s marimba smacks handily assert themselves in the tougher program expressed by the Nau Quartet. This is obvious from “One Way to Cultivate Courage”, the very first track, where Lencastre’s pumping and slathering sheets of sound along with resounding drum pops set out the session’s parameters. By midpoint however Pinheiro’s sprightly keyboard licks and wooden bar pops from Carneiro create a perfect backdrop for reed decompression as the saxist alternates between basso honks and altissimo squeaks before buzzing to a climax. That sets the pace for subsequent tracks which produce multiple sound tinctures. Sometimes between marimba shudders, subtle piano comping and reed flutters detours into pop-exotica are suggested until Lencastre’s tough tenor slurs blow them away. Occasionally sequences come in-and-out of focus. This happens when piano arpeggios, drum smacks and bass string thumps overcome marimba note clusters to create a moderato line, only to have it broken by distended reed cries. Based on an elongated piano slide, the concluding “The Magnet of Thought” shows how an improvisation can be narrow and restrained even as more instruments join the exposition. Spinning out the theme with raindrop-like plinks from Pinheiro, Faustino’s thumb-popping bass line and reed splats and tone-splatters means that equilibrium is maintained but with enough dissonance to confirm its innovative underpinning.

No mere color provider, these discs show how particular idiophones help propel and strengthen a program in varied improvisations. Ken Waxman

Guy Peters
